Bowring wears spectacles and holds a book in his right hand, the index finger marking a place. Printed verso: 'PHOTOGRAPHED by H. J. Whitlock 11, NEW STREET BIRMINGHAM' with a monogrammed and crowned badge. Sir John Bowring was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1856. Original: albumen print, carte de visite. ca. 1870 [?]
